Leewards denied possible victory as rain ruins final day (Round 7, Day 4)
CMC | 31/03/08
CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - Leeward Islands were denied a likely victory over Combined Campuses & Colleges after persistent rain forced the complete abandonment of the final day of their final round Carib Beer Series match at Grove Park Monday.
Early morning showers, which resulted in an impaired outfield, prevented play before lunch but the weather improved enough for umpires Patrick Grazette and Colin Whittle to schedule a 1 pm start.
After the lunch interval, however, the rains returned further reducing any hope of getting play started.
Following a further inspection by umpires and despite the best efforts of the ground staff, play was abandoned for the day around 2 pm. The match finished in a draw with Leewards taking away first innings points.
At the close of play on Sunday, Leewards seemed poised to pull off a commanding win over CCC after setting them a massive victory target of 557.
CCC finished the day at 99 for two, still requiring a further 458 runs to reach their target.
Leewards had produced a strong batting display on Sunday, led by their captain Runako Morton, as they rattled up 386 for five declared, after resuming at 82 for one.
Morton, aiming for a recall to the West Indies team, stroked an unbeaten 122 from 134 balls.
Kieran Powell, the 18-year-old batting sensation, was named Man-of-the Match for his innings of 85 and 99 on regional first class debut.
