Windies ready for Bangla clash
Dhaka, Bangladesh – West Indies will be focussed and determined when they face Bangladesh in their ICC Cricket World Cup Group B match at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on Friday.
First ball is 2.30 pm (4.30 am Eastern Caribbean Time/3.30 am Jamaica Time).
Many observers believe the match will be a close contest and the Windies players know they will come up against a capable home side backed by a vocal crowd of over 25,000.
Captain Darren Sammy has insisted that his team have the tools – mentally and physically to combat the Bangladeshi Tigers.
“We are not looking too far ahead... we are not looking at the games later in the group stage. Our focus is entirely on Bangladesh and what we need to do to beat them. It looks like a good wicket here, it should be a very good match,” Sammy told reporters at the official pre-match media session.
“This is a very important game because Bangladesh are a very competitive side and we have to take them very seriously. We will look to execute our plans well. When we play at home, we expect fans to support us, so of course the crowd will support Bangladesh here. We won’t be affected all that much by the crowd. We are focussed and ready for this.”
Both teams enter the match on two points from two matches. The Windies lost their first match to South Africa but rebounded to trounce the Netherlands by 215 runs. Bangladesh lost to India in a high-scoring affair, and then beat Ireland in a close, low-scoring encounter.
“Every match is a very important match and we are focussed on the games as they come. Bangladesh rely heavily on their spinners and that will form a big part of their bowling attack. We have to play them well and look to counter their bowling. We have players who can counter them and give us some big performances in this match,” Sammy added.
